Arboretum to Participate in National Trails Day

Volunteers Welcomed; Trail Markers Donated by Area Business

ESPERANCE, NY (05/30/2007)(readMedia)-- Thousands of people from across the country gather at hundreds of trail heads nationwide to improve hiking trails each year. This June, the Landis Arboretum will join in and work to improve segments of the more than 8 miles of groomed trails on its 548-acres that straddle Montgomery and Schoharie Counties.

Volunteers are invited to bring work gloves, a favorite shovel and/or pruners, some sun screen, a camera -- and to join in the fun on Saturday, June 2 between 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Most tools will be provided.

Trail Markers Donated The Arboretum gratefully acknowledges the continued support of its many friends and volunteers who are at the heart of its ability to function as a non-profit enterprise and community garden of trees, shrubs and flowers.

In the spirit of National Trail Days, area residents and Arboretum members Cheryl and Steve Perog of Capitol Supply, Inc. Duanesburg, NY, donated 500 weather-resistant trail markers to highlight the boundaries of the Woodland Trail, one of the main arteries at the Arboretum.

"We're always surprised by the generosity of our members," says Fred Breglia, Head of Horticulture and Operations at Landis. "Our goal is to color-code and highlight each of the trails that comprise our pedestrian byways for the enjoyment and safety of visitors. These green markers will be timeless reminders of the Perogs - and others like them - who are so supportive of the Arboretum."

He suggested that other trails are slated to be color-coded and provide an opportunity for those who wish to underwrite the cost of additional markers for the Arboretum's extensive trail system.
