Art at the Arboretum: Capturing the Beauty that Surrounds

ESPERANCE, NY (06/04/2007)(readMedia)-- Long a destination of horticulturists, environmentalists, “earth watchers,” and birders, the Landis Arboretum beckons to artists as well. The Arboretum’s spectacular setting and 548-acre campus provide a welcoming canvas and natural stimulus for the creative mind.

BOTANICAL DRAWING, July 7, 14, 21, & 29; 9 – 11:30 am (Saturdays)

Professional botanical illustrator Tressa Vellozzi will teach participants the basics of botanical drawing using pencil, pen, ink, and watercolors. Tressa enjoys sharing her techniques of observation and fondness for plants with artists of varying skills. Students can expect individual attention. Class size is limited. Register by June 28. $40 members, $55 non-members. This Arboretum offering is funded in part by the NYS Council on the Arts Decentralization Regrant Program. LANDSCAPE PAINTING, August 13 – 17, 9:30 am-12:30 pm (Monday - Friday)

Established artist Deborah Beck invites those of all levels to explore the joys of landscape painting amidst the beautiful natural settings and vistas of the Landis Arboretum, using water based paints, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, or oils (for those with their own easel). Ms. Beck will demonstrate how to analyze and compose each scene for initial sketches and how to build up colors and forms. Additional topics may include color mixing, texture, brushwork, shape, line, and value. Class participants will paint at several sites in the Arboretum. Supply list will be furnished upon registration. Register by August 3. $80 members, $100 non-members.

About the Arboretum

The Landis Arboretum is a multifaceted gem along the Route 20 Scenic Corridor between Albany and Skaneateles. Landis is central to the New York State Wine and Spa Trails, and in close proximity to historic Sharon Springs. He Arboretum is a natural respite for those traveling to the high-volume tourist attractions between the Albany, Cooperstown, and Finger Lakes Regions.

The Landis Arboretum includes a nationally recognized collection of oaks and is registered with the North American Plant Collections Consortium (NAPCC). The Arboretum also is included in the New York State Route 20 Bluebird Trail, bringing even more birdwatchers to the site. The Arboretum’s vast dark sky and wide horizons attract area astronomers to its meeting house and parking field for sky-watching events throughout the year.
