Ashley Sarver Accepted Lock Haven University Online Masters Program

Joins Grandparents in Honoring the Tradition of Lock Haven University

LOCK HAVEN, PA (12/22/2009)(readMedia)-- Lock Haven University is pleased to announce that Ashley Sarver has been accepted into the Online Master of Education Teaching and Learning Program. Sarver joins her grandparents William L. Maule and Elizabeth (Harrison) Maule in honoring the tradition of teacher education through Lock Haven University.

Ashley's maternal grandparents, William L. Maule and Elizabeth C. Harrison, met at the State Teachers College at Lock Haven (now Lock Haven University) in 1941 where their romance bloomed. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 27, 2008. On their 65th wedding anniversary, the current President of Lock Haven University, Dr. Keith Miller, presented them a congratulatory anniversary letter. The Maules currently reside in Montoursville, PA.

Elizabeth graduated from the State Teachers College at Lock Haven in 1943 with Bachelors Degree in Education; and later completed graduate work at Penn State University for Master's Equivalency. She retired in1982 after 30 years of employment as a teacher, middle-school librarian, and coordinator of elementary libraries in the Montoursville Area School District. Among her fourth grade students was Dr. Steven J. Rush, Assistant Professor, in the Department of Elementary and Middle Level Education at Lock Haven University. Elizabeth remembers Dr. Rush well, as she does most of her many students.

After Graduating from the State Teachers College at Lock Haven in February of 1943, William joined the ranks of The Fighting Forty--as these forty Lock Haven students came to be called--and boarded the train that carried them to WWII service. Miraculously, all forty men who left from Lock Haven returned home relatively unharmed.

After the war, William served first as a teacher and then Principal of Montoursville High School throughout the 1960's and 70's.

The Maule's have three adult children: Elizabeth Ann, Bill Jr., and James; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Their granddaughter Ashley Sarver is now a student at Lock Haven University in the Online Master of Education Teaching and Learning Program.

A resident of San Francisco CA, Sarver is the daughter of Gary Sarver and Elizabeth Maule who reside in Athens, OH. Sarver works as The Director of the School of Independent Learners, a private one-to-one and small-group High School in Los Altos, CA.

The educational legacy of her grandparents inspires Ashley to lead reform efforts at her school in California. Ashley works closely with teachers to create a cohesive school-wide curriculum set, with a full range of classes, from college prep to Advanced Placement. She spends her days designing and implementing a school-wide curricular shift, away from the 'one class, one textbook' mentality and toward interactive online lessons. She envisions a school that enables every student--through the creative use of technology--to individualize their education.
