Association Announces Support for Illegal Passing Legislation

Stiffer Penalties and Enforcement, Increased Education Sought

ALBANY, NY (05/03/2010)(readMedia)-- The New York Association for Pupil Transportation will conduct a press conference in Room 120 of the Legislative Office Building at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 2010. The purpose of the press conference is to express the support of the Association for legislation aimed at reducing the incidence of the illegal passing of school buses and at penalizing those who violate the laws related to passing school buses. Several Assembly Members and Senators who have introduced various bills that address this issue have been invited to join the Association for this press conference. The bills include: • A10240 by Assemblyman Michael Cusick and S6818 by Senator Brian Foley • A4054 by Assembly Transportation Chair David Gantt and S1244 by Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson • A7778 by Assemblyman Peter Rivera Illegal passing of school buses -- which occurs an estimated 50,000 times per day -- is a significant safety concern for the 2.3 million school children who ride yellow school buses every day in our state. NYAPT members will be in Albany on May 4th to advocate passage of this legislation as well as to advocate for budget action related to school transportation services and for legislation to enhance the screening of school bus driver candidates.
