LA CAMIONETA Featured at School Bus Conference

School Buses Converted by Guatemalan Villages

ALBANY, NY (07/12/2013)(readMedia)-- The Cyr Foundation and the New York Association for Pupil Transportation are pleased to present a unique social and educational opportunity during our 2013 Annual School Transportation Conference.

At 3:30 PM on Monday, July 15, 2013, we will host an invitation-only screening of a nationally acclaimed documentary entitled "LA CAMIONETA." It will be followed by a question-and-answer dialogue with the film's producer, Mark Kendall. This event will be held in the Swyer Theatre in the Empire State Performing Arts Center (The Egg).

The 72-minute film deals with a deep cultural story of Guatemalan villagers that come to America to purchase used school buses at auction. The film follows the villagers and the bus as they return to Guatemala where a specialized team of villagers convert the bus into a village transportation vehicle. The bus is hand-tooled, re-furbished and painted and finished to reflect the villagers' customs and peoples and memories, etc.

It is a fascinating and powerful story with many dimensions and, we believe, significant educational value. To underscore the educational merit of the film, we have learned that Vanderbilt University and its Center for Latin-American Studies is preparing a series of K-5, 6-8, and HS curricula that are aligned with common core rubrics. This will help to ensure its incorporation into classroom activities and other academic purposes. We will learn more about this important undertaking at the screening of the film.

We invite the media to attend and to view the film with us and to have a few moments to interview the producer, Mark Kendall.
