Michael Adler's astrophotography

PAUL SMITHS, NY (04/19/2016)(readMedia)-- A renowned astronomer will share his astrophotography at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in the Pine Room at Paul Smith's College.

Michael Adler, a retired General Electric physicist and philanthropist, is returning to the college after nearly five years to share photos of deep-sky objects, such as distant galaxies and nebulas, taken from a high-powered telescope in Jackson Hole, Wyo. He'll also give a talk on astronomical imaging. Refreshments will be served.

"There has been a real revolution in equipment and techniques that allow amateurs to take images that in the past were only possible in expensive observatories," Adler said. "Since my last visit, I have an observatory and a new 20-inch telescope. These images are truly amazing and beautiful in their own right, but they also provide information about the universe that informs us about the place and nature of this planet."

Adler and his wife, Virginia, have contributed about $200,000 to Paul Smith's College over the years. They also established the Virginia and Michael Adler Scholarship to help students pay for college.
