Atlanta Resident and Author Emily Ellison Receives Oglethorpe University's School Bell Award

ATLANTA, GA (04/18/2013)(readMedia)-- Atlanta resident and author Emily Ellison, a 1997 graduate of Oglethorpe University, will be presented with the School Bell Award during Oglethorpe University's Alumni Weekend, April 19-21, 2013. The School Bell Award recognizes alumni who have made lasting contributions to the field of education.

Ellison is the visionary and co-founder of Atlanta Girls' School, a non-sectarian, non-discriminatory, non-profit college preparatory day school for adolescent girls and young women that opened in fall 2000. She also served for five years as President and Executive Director of Literacy Action, Inc., a 45-year-old nonprofit organization in Atlanta that teaches undereducated adults basic literacy skills and provides workplace training. Ellison is an active member of the Atlanta community, serving on the Advisory Board of The Hambidge Center, the Honorary Board of the Cliff Valley School, and as a Director of the Conlee Family Supporting Foundation.

Oglethorpe University was founded in 1835 and enrolls 1,100 students representing 34 states and 28 countries. Oglethorpe is a member of the Annapolis Group, an organization of America's most selective liberal arts institutions. For seven consecutive years, Oglethorpe has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for commitment to and achievement in community service.
