Author Dr. Lyn Mikel Brown to Speak on "Packaging Childhood" at Berkshire Country Day School

LENOX, MA (04/12/2010)(readMedia)-- Berkshire Country Day School in Lenox, MA is pleased to announce that Dr. Lyn Mikel Brown, author of the books "Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing our Daughters from Marketers' Schemes" and "Packaging Boyhood: Saving our Sons from Superheroes, Slackers, and Other Media Stereotypes," will be speaking at Berkshire Country Day School on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Furey Hall Music Room on BCD's Brook Farm campus at 55 Interlaken Road (Route 183). Dr. Brown will be giving a talk entitled "Packaging Childhood: Saving our Kids from Marketers, Schemes, and Stereotypes." This lecture, sponsored by the Berkshire Country Day School Parents' Association, is free and open to the public.
In her book, "Packaging Girlhood," Dr. Brown takes on the commercial establishment and their strategies for marketing to girls and looks at what parents can do to counteract the constant barrage of media messages that encourage for girls accessorizing over academics, sex appeal over sports, and fashion over friends. In "Packaging Boyhood" she explores how media and marketing target boys as they grow up and how media messages and stereotypes affect boys' identities, choices, and expectations about what it means to be a boy and a man. Her talk at BCD will address her research findings from both books and what parents can do to counteract the popular culture.
Lyn Mikel Brown, Ed.D. is a mom, professor, and community activist. Her research on girls' social and psychological development has garnered her notice in magazines like People Magazine and Mademoiselle, as well as reviews in newspapers such as The New York Times and Boston Globe. She is the author of four books and speaks widely on girls and aggression as well as girls and media, and girls and education. Her curricular materials are helping to address concerns about girlfighting in schools across the nation.
