ANNVILLE, PA (10/04/2016)(readMedia)-- Author Lisa Sewell will host a writing workshop and perform her poetry on Oct. 24–25, at Lebanon Valley College. Students, faculty, staff, and the public are invited to attend her poetry reading Monday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Zimmerman Recital Hall of the Suzanne H. Arnold Gallery.

Sewell's visit continues a new series of speakers being funded by a President's Innovation Fund grant, and it will enable students the opportunity to experience innovative and interactive programming. The LVC English Department's "Writing: A Life" series will bring accomplished writers to campus for workshops, readings, and book signings.

Sewell recently received recognition for her poetry collection "Impossible Object," which won the 2014 Tenth Gate prize. Her work has also been featured in a variety of literary journals such as the Paris Review, Ploughshares, and the Harvard Review.

Aside from being a published author, Sewell is also the co-editor-along with Claudia Rankine-for two books, American Poets in the 21st Century: The New Poetics and Eleven More American Women Poets in the 21st Century: Poetics Across North America.

Sewell teaches at Villanova University as director of academics, gender & women's studies, and as an associate professor of English.

During Sewell's visit, she will highlight her work and touch on the theme of LVC's 2016–17 Colloquium topic, Memory.

The 2016–17 Colloquium Series recognizes that memory is central to our identity as a species, and as individuals, cultures, and products of institutions. Speakers, films, and other events will explore: Have we truly measured the value of memory in all its aspects? What is the cost when memory-individual, social, cultural, and technological-is lost or irrevocably transformed?

This year's Colloquium Series will investigate these questions and bring memory into view as a source of joy, fear, challenge, and inspiration.
