BCD Upper School Latin Students Take Top Honors at 2008 Classics Day
LENOX, MA (01/30/2008)(readMedia)-- Berkshire Country Day School, an independent school serving students in Pre-kindergarten through Grade 9, is pleased to announce that Upper School students in Grades 7-9 successfully competed against 280 other students from a total of nine schools in Western Massachusetts at the Pioneer Valley Classical Association’s Classics Day, Thursday, January 24, at Mount Holyoke College, and emerged victorious in a number of categories:
In the Oral Interpretation Contests, Novice Level, BCD swept the Top 3 spots: First Place – Kelt Wilska (Grade 7, Old Chatham, NY), Second Place – Jonathan Sokolsky (Grade 7, Great Barrington, MA), and Third Place – Harry Rich (Grade 7, Pittsfield, MA).
In the Oral Interpretation Contests, Intermediate Level, BCD swept the Top 3 spots: First Place – Claire Meyer (Grade 8, West Stockbridge, MA), Second Place – Emily Rowe (Grade 8, Dalton, MA), Third Place – Sandy Moore (Grade 8, Great Barrington, MA).
In the Oral Interpretation Contests, Advanced Prose Level, BCD 9th grader Christopher Mangiardi (Richmond, MA) came in Second Place.
In the Costume Contest, 7th graders Lauren Graham (Hinsdale, MA) and Catherine Hennessey (Richmond, MA) came in Second Place for their depiction of Roman girls, and Ava Paquin (Grade 7 – Hinsdale, MA) came in Third Place for her depiction of Cloelia (Roman heroine).
In the Mythology Certamen contest, the BCD team of Ben Paley (Grade 9, Pittsfield, MA), Jonah Strassler (Grade 8, Lee, MA), Nikolaj Brattke (Grade 8, Lenox, MA) and Kelt Wilska (Grade 7, Old Chatham, NY) came in Second Place.
In the Novice/Latin I Certamen content, the BCD team of Dylan Cole-Kink (Grade 7, West Stockbridge, MA), Niklas Rhodes (Grade 8, Great Barrington, MA), Harry Rich (Grade 7, Pittsfield, MA), and Jonathan Sokolsky (Grade 7, Great Barrington, MA) came in Third Place.
In the Art Contest, Sculpture Category, 9th grader Jeffrey Lowenstein (Sheffield, MA) came in First Place for his sculpture of “Cerberus” and 7th grader Jackie Ansel (New Lebanon, NY) came in Third Place. Ava Paquin (Grade 7 – Hinsdale, MA) came in Second Place in the Painting Category. The BCD team of Matthew Merritt (Grade 8, Lenox, MA), Greg Horth (Grade 8, Dalton, MA) and Amory Carhart (Grade 8, Lenox, MA) came in Second Place in the Military Category. In the Model Category it was a clean sweep for BCD: the team of Erin Barry (Grade 8, Pittsfield, MA), Elizabeth Butler (Grade 8, Pittsfield, MA), and Morgan Schuler (Grade 8, Stockbridge, MA) came in First Place for their model of a “Greek Temple with Ionic Columns” (frosted cake), Olivia Dolan (Grade 7, Chatham, NY) came in Second Place, and the team of Eliza Fairbrother (Grade 8, West Stockbridge, MA), Winston Boney (Grade 8, Hillsdale, NY) and Katherine Crane (Grade 8, Dalton, MA) came in Third Place.
