BVU Band Presents Spring Concert May 14

STORM LAKE, IA (04/27/2017) (readMedia)-- The Buena Vista University (BVU) Concert Band, under the direction of Jerry Bertrand, assistant professor of music, will present its annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 14 at 4 p.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel on the BVU campus.

The Concert Band's portion of the program will include "Zing" by Scott McAllister, two movements from Alfred Reed's "Second Suite for Band" and "Galop Zip Boom" by C. E. Duble. The featured work of the concert will be a performance of the musical poem, "The Dream of Oenghus," which is loosely based on the Irish legend of Prince Oenghus.

The featured guest artist will be Robert Gibson on trumpet and flugal horn. He will perform "Concertpiece" by James Curnow, "En Aranjuez con tu Amor" from the second movement of Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto de aranjuez" for guitar and "La Virgen De La Macarena" arranged by Charles Koff.

Gibson has been involved with instrumental music education as a teacher and clinician for more than 35 years, including service in both public and parochial schools. He is the founding director of the Briar Cliff Jazz Ensemble, which began in 2006. Gibson joined the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra as a trumpet player in 1979 and has held the position of principal trumpet since 1993. He has also served on the advisory board of the Iowa Jazz Championships and is a member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association. Gibson recently retired as assistant director of the Sioux City Municipal Band after 14 seasons. He has performed with Joe Williams, John Pizzarelli, Louise Mandrell, Lee Greenwood, Toni Tennile, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis, the Broadway touring musical "La Cage aux Folles," Byron Stripling, Eddie Daniels and Arturo Sandoval, among others.

The Spring Concert is free and open to the public to attend.
