BVU CONCERT BAND TO PRESENT HOLIDAY CONCERT DEC. 10

STORM LAKE, IA (11/30/2017) (readMedia)-- The Buena Vista University (BVU) Concert Band, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music Jerry Bertrand, will present its annual holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel on the BVU campus.

The program will open with "Nabucco Overture," written by Giuseppe Verdi in 1842. The work was transcribed for the modern concert band in 1956. By contrast, the second work, "Masque" by W. Francis McBeth, is written in a contemporary idiom that makes use of 20th century composition devices. "Poem" by John Frantzen was written in memory of an extraordinary young man, who was a trumpet player, poet, and actor. The work reflects seven different episodes in his life. "Star Crossed" is a unique work that combines a movie filmed with comic book style animation with the music score written by Andrew Boysen. The audience will view the film as the BVU Concert Band performs the music.

After intermission the audience will be treated to music of the holiday season, including "March of the Toys" by Victor Herbert, "Reminiscence" by David Moore, and a holiday medley called "A Festive Christmas" by Kenny Bierschenk.

The concert is free and open to the public to attend.
