WHITTER, CA (11/27/2013)(readMedia)-- Senior Arturo Alvarez, a Barstow native, participated in the 2013 Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR), Change the World: Participate, Innovate, Illuminate, hosted by Whittier College on Saturday, November 23, along with 1,100 scholars from colleges and universities from throughout the region.
A Whittier Scholars Program major, Alvarez presented his research, "Ready to Die: The Worship of Death in Los Angeles," in a 15-minute seminar presentation chaired by faculty moderators.
Nominated to the Whittier College Dean's List and awarded the John Greenleaf Merit Scholarship, Alvarez conducted his research as part of the Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program which supports Whittier College students in exploring their interests in college teaching by providing tuition assistance, summer research opportunities, and academic-year support through faculty mentors.
SCCUR provides a forum for the presentation of the best research, scholarship, and creative activities of undergraduate students in the region, and encourages communication of innovative achievements across disciplines, including the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and applied sciences.
