Berkshire Country Day School Hosts BCD Masters Lecture Series

LENOX, MA (10/14/2010)(readMedia)-- Berkshire Country Day School, an independent school for students in Preschool through Grade 9 located in Lenox, MA, will be hosting a series of morning out, adult education and enrichment presentations featuring members of its faculty. The first in the BCD Masters Lecture Series will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Peterson Hall on Berkshire Country Day School's historic Brook Farm campus. It will feature three, one-hour long presentations: "Care and Feeding of the Brain," "Italian with Mozart," and "Mexican Cooking to Modern Artifacts." Cost is $45.00 and includes a continental breakfast and course materials. Childcare is available for an additional fee. Kate Meyer has been teaching Middle and Upper School history and English at BCD since 2005. She has been a participant/scholar at a number of National Endowment for the Humanities Institutes, and most recently participated in a Mind, Brain, and Education Conference in Cambridge, sponsored by Harvard & M.I.T. Her presentation, "Care and Feeding of the Brain," will provide highlights on the newest neuroscience research regarding how exercise, nutrition, sleep and media impact cognitive ability, with an emphasis on the teenage brain. The information presented will help demystify the teen and give parents some very practical ways to help their teen negotiate school with the changes occurring in the physical make-up of the brain. Kate has her B.A. in Medieval History from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and M.A.T. in U.S. History & Education from the University of Illinois.

John Dreger teaches French and Spanish at Berkshire Country Day School but is equally as versed in Latin and Italian. "Italian with Mozart" is a fun and easy way to learn or improve on your Italian. Using passages from Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro," John will help participants learn to understand, pronounce and sing along to some of their favorite arias. This presentation is meant for all levels, from beginners to fluent speakers. John has his B.A. in German Studies from Harvard College and M.A. in Classical Studies from Harvard University Extension School.

Michael McCarthy, BCD's Middle School Spanish teacher, will be presenting a talk entitled, "Mexican Cooking to Modern Artifacts." This presentation will feature primitive tools used in food preparation that are still in use in some areas of Mexico. These ingenious inventions have morphed into many implements used in kitchens around the world. The presentation will conclude with making salsa and a tasting. Michael has his B.A. in Education/Spanish from Boston College and M.A. in Latin American Studies from Universidad de las Americas.
