Berkshire Country Day School to Present "From Straw to Gold"
LENOX/STOCKBRIDGE, MA (02/10/2017) (readMedia)-- Berkshire Country Day's Upper School Theater Ensemble will present an entirely original production of From Straw to Gold on Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 4 at 2 p.m. This production is inspired by the classic Grimm Brother's fairytale, Rumpelstiltskin.
Refreshing and modern, fourteen actors between the ages of 12 and 15 have spent the last six weeks exploring themes of power, rebellion, and magic raised in the original source material.
Along with a host of colorful characters, this modern version of the story includes a band of punk rock gypsies, a trio of well-meaning yet dysfunctional knights, and a duo of evil tax collectors.
"We came up with our ideas based on games, improvisation and writing and then remixed the story in our own way," said student Julia Mammen.
"The material grew and evolved as soon as we started working on our feet," said student Harrison Seeley.
"Momentum and teamwork has continued to increase during rehearsals," added student Miriam Miller.
Each year, the Upper School Theater Ensemble presents two full-length productions that have included a range of original and devised performances, interdisciplinary collaborations and significant classical and contemporary works.
"The student's interest and curiosity is what continues to drive the process, shape the characters, and present our unique version of this familiar tale," said Director Sara Katzoff. "This process emerges from a collaboration that highlights the voices and creativity of our students. These kinds of experiences are an extension of the thriving community of citizens and scholars that is so present in the culture of BCD."
Both performances take place at the Winthrop Theater on the Boston University Campus at 45 West Street in Lenox, MA. There is a suggested donation at the door.
