Best Brownies Earn Ribbons in Iowa State Fair Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/13/2013)(readMedia)-- Homemade frosting and decadent brownies were in the spotlight at the Vera Towne's Chocolate Brownies with Frosting contest judged Saturday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Cynthia Murphy of Des Moines took first place and a $250 cash prize, while Lana Ross of Indianola placed second earning her a $125 award. Third place and $75 were awarded to Ames resident Marta Burkgren.

Competitors were asked to create their own brownies from scratch complete with homemade frosting. Entries were judged on taste and appearance.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
