MANKATO, MN (01/28/2009)(readMedia)-- Bill Zurn of Callaway, Minn. was elected president of the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association (MSGA) last night during a board of directors meeting in Minneapolis.
Zurn has served as MSGA's Vice President since June 2008, stepping up as the interim president in early January 2009 to fill the vacant president's position. Zurn has had an active role on several program committees including Research and International Marketing and was instrumental in working with Congressman Collin Peterson on the 2008 Farm Bill.
"I'm honored to be the new president of the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association and look forward to tackling the tough issues facing soybean farmers," Zurn said. "The visits we made at the capitol on Tuesday have reinforced my belief in active involvement in the legislative process. We need to be vigilant and stay on top of issues, especially in the area of water quality."
Zurn, his wife Karolyn and their sons, grow soybeans, sugar beets, corn and wheat on their farm in Becker County.
Elections were also held for the positions of Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Kurt Krueger of Rothsay, Minn. was elected Vice President; Bill Gordon of Brewster, Minn. was elected Treasurer; and Bruce Schmoll of Claremont, Minn. was elected Secretary. All terms expire in June.
MSGA is a non-profit, farmer-controlled membership organization established in 1962. Its goal is to assure profitable soybean farming by monitoring government policies and supporting research and market development activities.
