Dr. McHardy Smith

PHILADELPHIA, PA (11/07/2011)(readMedia)-- Dr. McHardy Smith has been named instructor of pharmaceutical sciences in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at University of the Sciences.

Dr. Smith has 20 years of experience in drug discovery, emphasizing membrane biochemistry, and biochemical pharmacology. He excels in guiding the research efforts from senior staff members to high school students. Dr. Smith assesses and develops talent from both his peers and his students through dynamic monitoring and mentoring.

Dr. Smith has contributed to the advancement of two compounds which made it to clinics, and identified and implemented cutting-edge technologies which focused primarily on membrane proteins. Dr. Smith has 54 publications and 27 abstracts.

From 2009 to 2011, Dr. Smith's career path encompassed multiple positions. He was an adjunct professor in the department of biology at Middlesex Community College; a mentor at Student2Science, a non-profit organization bringing laboratory experiences to middle and high school students; and a professional consultant for Terapio.

Dr. Smith was the senior research fellow for Merck & Co. Inc. from 2000 to 2008. He was responsible for supervising channel projects which led to the submissions of three compounds for safety.

On a personal level, Dr. Smith was the head coach and assistant coach for a little league baseball team in Warren, NJ from 1993 to 2002. He also takes an interest in breeding, training, and showing Dalmatians in conformation and performance events.

Dr. Smith received his bachelor's in psychology degree from the University of Vermont and his doctorate of pharmacy degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel. He has a postdoctoral fellow from Washington University.

Dr. Smith currently resides in Bound Brook, NJ.
