LORETTO, PA (03/21/2011)(readMedia)-- Brittany Shaulis, a senior political science major at Saint Francis University, was recently awarded a grant through the School of Arts & Letters' Intrepid program. Shaulis, a Roaring Spring native, will use her grant money to travel to Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY, where she will work with sanctuary animals. The Farm Sanctuary, home to previously abused factory and farm animals, also serves as an animal advocacy group.
Shaulis's research at Farm Sanctuary is part of an independent study project she designed with Dr. Lauri Chose, Assistant Professor of English at Saint Francis. During her independent study, Shaulis will study the animal rights movement as well as literature written about the movement.
Intrepid, a grant program for undergraduate students in the university's School of Arts & Letters, helps to support student research, service, and/or academic projects.
To be eligible to receive an Intrepid grant, a student must be a junior or senior and have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.25. The student is also required to write a proposal that outlines the purpose, goals, and costs of the project. The University awarded three Intrepid grants in Spring 2011.
