Bronx Groups to Push for Extending Public Comment Period As Cross Bronx Enviro Review Collides with Holidays
Bronx groups ask Gov. Hochul and NYSDOT for more time to review the environmental impacts of the state's Cross Bronx repair plans, as public comment period overlaps with major holidays and nearly 2-week-long school break for children; Goal is to have Cross Bronx 5 Bridges project do meaningful community engagement the right way
BRONX, NY (11/25/2025) (readMedia)-- Today, Bronx community members will hold a virtual press conference, rallying for Governor Hochul and the New York State Department of Transportation to extend the public comment period for the environmental review phase of the Cross Bronx 5 Bridges project. Ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, Governor Hochul and the New York State Department of Transportation released its long-awaited Cross Bronx environmental assessment just last week, leaving community members to review nearly 6,000 pages of material during the holiday season.

On top of families celebrating Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's Day, this year children at NYC public schools are out of school for a 12-day winter break - leaving many families only a month to weigh in during the current public comment period. Just two weeks ago, local community and advocacy groups sent a letter to the Governor and NYSDOT requesting a 90-day comment period and enhanced outreach and engagement efforts to engage the 64,000 residents living along the project's sited area. While Bronxites appreciate the state's provisions for interpretation services and a virtual meeting option, advocates will amplify the requests from their letter and urge the state to build more opportunities for meaningful community feedback and a successful, equitable project outcome.
