ALBANY, NY (05/08/2013)(readMedia)-- The Preservation League of New York State has selected The Buffalo News of Buffalo to receive an award for Excellence in Historic Preservation as an outstanding publication. The League particularly wishes to recognize the visionary leadership of Stanford Lipsey and a decade of editorial work from Dawn Marie Bracely with this award.
The League's statewide awards program honors notable achievements in retaining, promoting and reusing New York State's irreplaceable architectural heritage.
"This year marks a decade of editorials written by Dawn Marie Bracely and published by The Buffalo News in support of historic preservation tax credits," said Jay DiLorenzo, president of the Preservation League. "In an era when the news media typically maintains interest in an issue for only a day or two, The Buffalo News became a dedicated, informed and passionate supporter of meaningful rehabilitation tax credit programs for New York State's historic residential and commercial properties."
DiLorenzo continued, "From the Darwin D. Martin House to the Richardson Olmsted Complex, the leadership of Stanford Lipsey has left a lasting mark on some of Buffalo's and the nation's most significant landmarks. His support for reinvestment in historic properties and the advocacy by The Buffalo News for New York State's rehabilitation tax credits programs promise to have an enduring impact."
"I am honored and humbled, but the true recipient of this award is The Buffalo News," said Ms. Bracely. "The News editorial board and publisher emeritus Stanford Lipsey began promoting historic preservation years ago. Without that emphasis, these editorials would not have been written."
According to Howard Zemsky, the managing partner of Larkin Development who nominated Mr. Lipsey, "As one of the most effective and powerful business leaders in Western New York over the past 30 years, Stan has made attention to and investment in our historic resources a priority of his business, The Buffalo News. Because it has been a priority of his and his company, it has become a priority of our community and region."
The awards will be presented at the Preservation League's Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony in New York City at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15th at the historic New York Yacht Club, 37 West 44th Street.
The complete list of award winners is: the New York State Capitol, Restoration of Skylights and Laylights, Albany County; East 180th Street Station, Bronx; Keramos Hall, Brooklyn; Hotel @ The Lafayette, Buffalo; The TAUNY Center, Canton; The Central Trust Building, Rochester. Albany Housing Authority will be honored for organizational excellence. The Buffalo News: Dawn Marie Bracely, Editorial Writer and Stanford Lipsey, Publisher Emeritus, will be honored as an outstanding publication.
"As we launch our 40th Anniversary celebration in 2013, the Preservation League is looking forward to exploring not just the past, but the future of historic preservation. Many of the 2013 award winners provide valuable examples for other practitioners by incorporating energy efficiency techniques, adaptive reuse strategies and Federal and State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits," said DiLorenzo. "Each year, we are impressed by the number and variety of laudable nominations, and this year was no exception. We are delighted to celebrate the editorial work of Dawn Marie Bracely and the leadership of Stanford Lipsey and to honor The Buffalo News as an outstanding publication."
