STAUNTON, VA (03/19/2010)(readMedia)-- It is "standing room only" at the Gypsy Hill Skate Park thanks to the addition of new half-pipes, grind boxes, rails, ramps and BMX features. Local teens were enlisted to assist the Staunton Parks and Recreation Department with ideas for new additions and configurations at the old skate park. The upshot: More "street " elements such as grind boxes and rails as well as a few more "vertical" elements like the new half-pipe and more excitement. Experienced and novice skaters have turned out in droves at the Gypsy Hill facility. Rookie skaters watch as the veterans nail the Boneless 180 and maneuver recklessly through Ollies with high degrees of difficulty. To address the beginner skateboarder's lack of skill and to limit injuries, the Staunton Parks and Recreation Department will be offering a Beginning Skateboarding Class.
On Saturday mornings at 11am, experienced Skateboarder Brian Bell will teach the basics. The class will cover rolling, stances, pushing, balance, waiting your turn as well as a few beginning tricks. The 90 minute sessions will be taught in groups of five @ a cost of $30/person.
The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department is committed to encouraging oudoor physical activity and offering more positive places and programs for teens per the 2007 Needs Assessment. This facility and class is directly in line with our commitments.
