CM Levine, Parents + Children to Rally Against Juul Outside NYC Office

New Yorkers will condemn multi-billion-dollar e-cig company for hooking kids on nicotine with "flavor pods," call on Council to pass bills to restrict Juul and other flavored tobacco products

NEW YORK, NY (08/20/2019) (readMedia)-- Today, NYC Councilmember Levine, parents, and advocates will join together in front of Juul's NYC office to condemn the multi-billion-dollar company's campaign to hook kids on flavored tobacco products and demand the New York City Council restrict the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and menthol cigarettes.

In July, New York City students testified at a congressional hearing that Juul representatives went into their classrooms and told them Juul products were "totally safe" despite containing nicotine. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug that can have lasting damaging effects on adolescent brain development and has been linked to a variety of adverse health outcomes for the developing fetus.

According to the CDC's National Youth Tobacco Survey, during the one-year period between 2017 and 2018 e-cigarette use among high school students increased by 78 percent. Over 3 million high school students used e-cigarettes in 2018 and more than 80 percent of kids who have used tobacco started with a flavored product.

The Council bills will crack down on the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and menthol cigarettes, which are also known to hook kids on nicotine and pose a serious health risk.
