CORRECTION: Date of the Flotilla Event is September 13

A flotilla celebrating a world canals conference will launch at 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 13, from Alcathy's in Waterford, on the Erie Canal above Lock 6. (Directions are listed below.)

Congressman Paul Tonko of Amsterdam, New York State Canal Corporation Director Carmella R. Mantello, a representative of the Canal Society of New York, state and local officials, and canal enthusiasts are scheduled to attend.

The flotilla's arrival in Rochester on September 19 coincides with opening of the 2010 World Canals Conference, scheduled from September 20 through 24.

Some of the vessels participating are the working and historic boats of the Canal Corporation fleet, historic tugboats, steamboats, canal boats and a wide variety of recreational pleasure craft.

DIRECTIONS TO ALCATHY'S IN WATERFORD:

From the New York State Thruway Interchange 23 (Downtown Albany, I-787), to I-787 North to the end. Turn right to Route 32 North; cross the bridge into Waterford on Saratoga Avenue. After about two miles, cross over the Erie Canal and take an immediate left onto Eighth Street. Follow Eighth Street north to the end. Turn left on to Washington Avenue (over railroad tracks). Continue about a half mile (Canal facilities will be on the left) and bear slightly left onto Flight Lock Road immediately after gravel parking lot and picnic area on left. Continue up Flight Lock Road to the end (past Locks 5 and 6). The road will dip sharply after the second guard gate (a bridge will be on the left) and will open into a large parking lot at the top of the Waterford Flight of locks.
