ALBANY, NY (07/11/2007)(readMedia)-- CSEA President Danny Donohue today praised the selection of Terrence Melvin as Secretary-Treasurer of the 2.5 million member New York State AFL-CIO.
“Terry Melvin has been a driving force in CSEA for more than 20 years, as a local president and later as my executive assistant, and I know he will be a great asset to all working people under the umbrella of the AFL-CIO,” said CSEA President Danny Donohue.
Melvin succeeds Paul F. Cole who retired in March 2006.
“Terry’s enthusiasm, zeal and commitment is unmatched,” Donohue added. “He is a man of firsts; the first person from the CSEA ranks to hold such an important position in the State Federation and also the first African-American to do so.”
Melvin was executive assistant to the CSEA President since 1996 and previously served for 13 years as president of CSEA Local 427 at the West Seneca Developmental Center.
He also serves as Director of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU), representing unions in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Ontario, Canada.
The AFL-CIO Executive Board unanimously elected Melvin yesterday at a regularly scheduled board meeting.
