WASHINGTON, DC (04/27/2007)(readMedia)-- Jane Young, an English professor at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), has received the New York State United Teachers' Higher Education Member of the Year award at the union's 35th Representative Assembly in Washington, D.C.
NYSUT President Richard C. Iannuzzi said Young led faculty and staff through the aftermath of 9/11 and has served as a grass-roots organizer in her 40 years of service to CUNY and the Professional Staff Congress. "Jane has been a strong advocate for faculty, students and her union at BMCC," Iannuzzi said, noting she serves as chapter chair for the PSC at the City University of New York.
NYSUT honored Young for creating "a real sense of union culture on campus by holding regular union meetings each month for more than 850 members and by sending out regular newsletters with frequent updates on campus issues. She is an outstanding union leader, bringing her whole, complex, thinking self to union work."
Young, a resident of Manhattan, exemplifies the best tradition of teaching in service to the public and of higher education activism, NYSUT said. A natural writer, Young had a substantial career as a journalist before turning to scholarly writing. Her journalistic work has been published in New York Magazine, The Village Voice, Newsday and other publications.
NYSUT represents more than 587,000 teachers, school-related professionals, academic and professional faculty in higher education, professionals in education and health care and retirees. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association and the AFL-CIO.
