CHARLESTON, SC (11/28/2011)(readMedia)-- Cadet Private Aaron Jacob Lee of Summerville, S.C., is a 2011 recipients of the Col. Loring K. Himelright Award presented annually by The Citadel School of Engineering.

Presented during Homecoming weekend each year, the award recognizes an outstanding first class (senior) cadet majoring in civil engineering for an exemplary record of academic achievement.

This year – and only for the third time in the award's 38-year history – two cadets were honored. Cadet Capt. Franklin Clay Settle of Inman, S.C., is the other recipient. Both received a $2,000 cash award.

"Not only does he fulfill all of the criteria for the Col. Loring K. Himelright Award, but Cadet Lee exemplifies the spirit of the professionalism that Himelright demanded of The Citadel civil engineering graduates during his tenure," said Ronald Welch, dean of the School of Engineering.

Himelright is the former head of the civil engineering department. The award was created upon his retirement in 1981.

Lee has been an active member of The Citadel Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Currently the secretary of the club, Lee also authored its annual report, served as chapter webmaster, and led the surveying team to the 2011 Carolinas Conference as captain. Lee also dedicates much of his time to service projects, such as the Battery2Beach community service project
