Caitlin Chciuk receives Lock Haven University President's Award

LOCK HAVEN, PA (04/17/2012)(readMedia)-- Caitlin Chciuk of Whippany, N.J. has received Lock Haven University's 2012 President's Award for Distinguished Service on Women's Issues. The award was presented at the Gerald R. Robinson Academic Honors and Foundation Awards Convocation on April 15.

In presenting the award, Nicole Burkholder-Mosco, associate professor of English and member of the President's Commission on the Status of Women, noted that Chciuk has been described as "resourceful," "committed," "disciplined," "motivated," and "exceptional." 

A senior majoring in English with a concentration in Writing, Caitlin Chciuk has been a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts, where she has worked for families living in the Jersey Battered Women's Shelter, she is a student assistant at LHU's HOPE Center, spearheading programs such as the "To Write Love on Her Arms" event, and she has recently won the 2012 Virginia Martin Gender Issues Essay Contest for her insightful research and writing on women's war and peace time activism. Her nominator explained that "her extra-curricular activities at LHU are largely centered on women's issues" and that she is a "strong, confident, well-informed young woman who inspires others to make good choices in their daily lives and to work consciously towards the betterment of lives for all people."

The President's Distinction award seeks to honor members of the LHU community who are notable for their service to the university and the community and who show particular emphasis on service furthering women's issues.  Faculty and staff recipients of the award will be announced at the President's open meeting in August.

Prior to announcing the 2012 student recipient of the President's Award for Distinguished Service on Women's Issues, Professor Burkholder-Mosco recognized all those who were nominated for the award.  Out of the thousands of women students at Lock Haven University, three were singled out for nominations. The nominees were Caitlin Chciuk, Heather Cottage and Alicia Perrelli.
