EVANSVILLE, IN (10/26/2011)(readMedia)-- The University of Evansville is proud to announce that Caitlyn Prosser of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, was recently awarded a prestigious ATHENA Scholarship. Prosser, the daughter of Jodi of Champaign-Urbana and Jamie of Camargo, Illinois, is an elementary education major and a graduate of the High School of Saint Thomas More.
Prosser, one of three local scholarship recipients for 2011, was honored at the 22nd annual ATHENA Awards Luncheon at The Centre in downtown Evansville, Indiana, on Friday, October 21.
"I am honored to receive this esteemed award," said Prosser. "I couldn't have done it without the professional experiences provided to me through the University of Evansville, especially the School of Education. Thanks go to all of my professors and mentors."
Each year, the Evansville ATHENA Awards Committee awards three scholarships to outstanding female students who support other female students; demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in academics and extracurricular activities; and provide valuable service to improve the quality of life for others in their school and community.
Scholarships were presented to one student from each of Evansville's three institutions of higher education: the University of Evansville, University of Southern Indiana, and Ivy Tech Community College. UE President Thomas A. Kazee generously provided a matching scholarship to double Prosser's award.
Prosser is active both on campus and in the Evansville community. Through the UEReads program, she tutors young people in the community and helps them learn to read. Prosser is fluent in Spanish and serves the local Latino community by running the children's Liturgy of the Word during Mass at Nativity Catholic Church, a predominantly Hispanic parish. She is also active in Evansville Civic Theatre and has been a UE cheerleader and admissions ambassador, among other areas of student leadership.
The ATHENA Scholarship and other awards are presented locally each year as part of ATHENA International, which has honored nearly 6,000 exemplary leaders in more than 500 communities across the globe since its inception in 1982.
