CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY (03/25/2019) (readMedia)-- Campbellsville University is searching for talented high school seniors to compete for two art scholarships worth a total of $6,000 each.
The university's annual art scholarship competition and workshop will be Saturday, April 6, beginning at 10 a.m. EDT in room 100 of the Art Building, 205A University Drive, Campbellsville, across from Gosser Fine Arts Center, 210 University Drive, Campbellsville, on campus.
Performance grant scholarships in art will also be awarded to other students who might not be chosen for the competitive art scholarships.
William Morse, chair of the department of Art and Design and associate professor of art, said registration and submission of a portfolio will begin at 10 a.m. in the art building with a free workshop in ceramics at 10:30 a.m. in Gosser Fine Arts Center.
A brunch will be provided for students, teachers, or parents as guests of the university at noon in the Winters Dining Hall at 411 N. Columbia Ave., Campbellsville.
Interviews with students and examination of portfolios by art faculty are at 12:45 p.m.
The announcement of the winning competitive art scholarships and performance grant scholarships recipients will be at 2 p.m. in room 100 of the art building.
A student interested in the scholarship competition or in the performance grants must present a portfolio of his or her finest work to the art and design faculty at 10 a.m., but those wanting to participate should contact Morse and send in an application before the event.
"This is an opportunity for talented, high school seniors who will be first-time freshmen to compete for an art scholarship," Morse said.
"The winning students will receive $750 scholarship monies per semester for the duration of eight semesters while they attend Campbellsville University as an art major," he said. The recipients must be art and design majors.
He said the competing students must have an academic standing equivalent to or higher than a 3.0 grade point average (B average) and maintain that average in college work at Campbellsville University if chosen for these scholarships.
The recipients of the scholarships may also receive performance grant awards and other forms of financial aid.
Any attending student who meets above criteria may be considered for a Performance Grant Scholarship in art as well.
Each competing student, with his or her teacher's advice, is to select three-15 of the "strongest and finest" examples of his/her artwork to take to the competition.
"The pieces selected should show ambition in idea, execution, style and technical skill," Morse said.
"Of the pieces selected, the student may select options of what kinds of media to bring," he said.
The three-dimensional work can consist of either sculpture, ceramics, or mixed media. The two-dimensional work can consist of black and white pieces with a variety of media including graphite, charcoal, scratch board, pen and ink, ink wash drawings, colored pieces including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, colored pencils, tempera, color prints, digital work, animation and illustration.
Morse said all work must be original and by the student. He said no pieces copied from another artist's work will be accepted and no work based upon pre-packaged kits and no photo mechanically reproduced prints will be accepted.
He said all two-dimensional work should be correctly matted, covered in acetate, shrink wrapped or framed.
Questions concerning the competition should be directed to Morse at (270) 789-5268 or wamorse@campbellsville.edu or the university switchboard at (270) 789-5000.
