LATHAM, NY (05/17/2011)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Capt. Chris Marion, a Binghamton resident and the Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator, will take command of the Utica- based 107th Military Police Company on June 17 and then deploy the unit to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.

Marion, a former enlisted Soldier who was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 2005, and has been serving as the executive officer of the 107th. The company is slated to deploy to the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base later this summer to assist with security at the detention camp there. The unit will mobilize on June 17.

Marion previously served as an enlisted Soldier and was mobilized to provide security at Stewart Air National Guard Base as part of Operation Noble Eagle following the September, 11 2001 attacks. He also served with Joint Task Force Empire Shield, the New York National Guard security element in New York City. Following his commissioning as an officer he deployed with the unit as a platoon leader to Afghanistan in 2008.

He is a graduate of Binghamton University, where he earned a degree in Political Science and Philosophy, Politics & Law in 2005. Marion grew up in Spencer, New York and graduated from Spencer Van-Etten High School.

His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal , Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, New York State Medal For Merit, New York State Defense of Liberty Medal, New York State Long and Faithful Service Medal, and the Air Assault Badge.
