Carnation native Chelsea Kern selected for teaching position in China

WALLA WALLA, WA (06/05/2013)(readMedia)-- Chelsea Kern of Carnation, Wash. was honored to receive a teaching fellowship in China after her graduation from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash.

Kern was selected as an English instructor through the Whitman in China program, an exchange established in 1982 by Professor David Deal. With this fellowship, Huang has the opportunity to assist with English instruction in a Chinese university for one academic year.

Kern was also chosen as a recipient of the Paul J. Jackson Award for Excellence in Literary Studies. This award is given to the student who writes the best paper in a class offered by the departments of language and literature.

In addition to this position, Kern was elected as a new member of Phi Beta Kappa, a national honor society that recognizes students who have succeeded academically in a wide variety of courses in the arts and sciences, including mathematics and foreign language. The Whitman chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1920.

Kern is the daughter of David and Marissa Kern and a 2009 graduate of the International Community School. She received a B.A. in English during the Whitman commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19.
