Carthage student presents research at National Wound Care Symposium

Carthage College nursing student Angelina Gersch presented her research, "Save a Limb, Save a Life: Screening in Communities with High Non-Traumatic Amputation Risk," at the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care in Las Vegas in September 2025.

Through her Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) project, Gersch worked with Save a Limb, Save a Life Foundation to research data related to peripheral arterial disease and community screening initiatives aimed at preventing non-traumatic amputations.

"This experience supported my goal of becoming a nurse by exposing me to essential services I had not seen before. I now feel empowered and more knowledgeable in research and presentation skills," Gersch said. Nursing faculty member Laura Swoboda served as a mentor for the research project.

Both of Gersch's abstracts were recognized among the top screening abstracts in a highly competitive national pool.
