SPRINGFIELD, MA (11/25/2013)(readMedia)-- Cassandra Deal of Tampa Bay, Fla., was recently named a recipient of the Skookum Award, an honor presented by Western New England University's Alumni Association. The Skookum is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in all their endeavors: academics, co-curricular activities, sports, and community service. "Skookum" is the Native American Chinook Indian word meaning "excellence." Deal was one of 15 outstanding senior students to receive the award during ceremonies on the Springfield, Mass. campus.
Majoring in Creative Writing, Deal is a member of the University's Honors program as well as numerous honor societies, including Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Residence Hall Honorary, and Sigma Tau Delta, where she currently serves as treasurer. Since freshman year, Deal has been active with The Review of Art and Literature publication on campus, serving as programming chair and editor-in-chief. She has also been a member of Campus Chorus since her freshman year as well as the Residence Hall Association. Upon graduation, Deal hopes to continue her education at Western New England University working towards an MBA.
