Cazenovia College Presents Ninth Annual Wheler Family Conference on World Affairs
Focus is on the aspects of advocacy in today's world
CAZENOVIA, NY (09/10/2010)(readMedia)-- Cazenovia College presents the ninth Annual Wheler Family Conference on World Affairs, Monday, Sept. 27, beginning at 9 a.m. The conference keynote presentation and the panels are free and open to the public. Panel locations will be announced during the keynote presentation.
Conference organizer, Dr. John Robert Greene, says, "This unique, student-centered event organizes intellectual discussion and analytical discourse via a collection of speakers and presenters to explore a variety of topics as they apply to national issues and world affairs. This year's conference is focused on advocacy."
The Wheler Family Conference is made possible through the support and efforts of the Wheler Family, in particular Barbara and A. Gordon Wheler, former trustees of the College. The conference is a U.S. Constitution Day event (http://constitutioncenter.org/constitutionday).
The conference opens at 9 a.m. in the Catherine Cummings Theatre, 16 Lincklaen St., with a welcome from Bradford G. Wheler, chair of the Cazenovia College Board of Trustees; and the keynote presentation, "From Campaign Staff to Government Staffer: Advocacy in National and Local Politics," by Jordan A Brooks, of Washington, D.C.; and Lindsay Bednarczyk '03, of Syracuse, N.Y. These two professionals in the national and local political field will discuss their experiences and how they use the political system to advocate for their values and policies.
Hour-long breakout panel discussions, beginning at, 10:10 a.m., focus on advocacy for protection from sexual violence, advocacy through the arts, advocacy for fairness, advocacy in social services, advocacy in the health profession, advocacy in public, and government relations, advocacy in inclusive education; and the keynote presenters will continue their discussion with those interested in advocacy in the political system. An invitation only luncheon, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., features the fourth annual Sarah Webster Addresses, by Jasmyne Cole, of Cincinnatus, N.Y., a junior majoring in social science at Cazenovia College, and Margaret Moreno of Syracuse, N.Y., a student at Corcoran High School. Their talks will focus on their personal perspectives on the world in the last decade.
Immediately following the luncheon, Brad Wheler will sign copies of his book, "Snappy Sayings: Wit & Wisdom from the World's Greatest Minds," an inspired collection of poignant quotes that resonate with readers of all ages. Wheler is also the author of "EIGHTEEN 6/10/71: The Poetry of John G. Hunter III," and "Dog Sayings: Wit & Wisdom from Man's Best Friend."
At 3:30 p.m., Dr. Eric Boyer, professor of English at Cazenovia College, will host the final panel of the day, a screening of the movie, "Charlie Wilson's War," in McDonald Lecture Hall.
