POTSDAM, NY (03/03/2014)(readMedia)-- Community Performance Series will celebrate St. Patrick's Day in style this year, with a performance by the award-winning Irish folk band Danú, on Monday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music.
The CPS Guest Artist Series concert will be preceded by a special pre-show beer-tasting event showcasing local brews from the St. Lawrence Brewing Company, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the lobby of the new Performing Arts Center.
Since its inception in 1994, Danú, which is named after the Celtic mother goddess, has become one of the most important traditional Irish ensembles. The band's concerts are true events, featuring high-energy performances and a glorious mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire. The Irish Times describes their music as "a spirit-raising concoction."
For over a decade, Danú's virtuosi players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki and vocals have performed around the globe, recorded seven critically acclaimed albums and produced a very popular live DVD. Winners of numerous awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, Danú has toured throughout Europe, the Middle East and North America.
"We are so excited to be bringing a group straight from Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in the North Country. Everyone feels the Irish spirit on St. Paddy's Day. There's no better way to catch that spirit than by listening to authentic Irish tunes. We hope to see a lot of faces, new and old, for both the beer tasting and concert," said CPS Executive Director Amy Flack.
Prior to opening the concert hall doors, CPS will host a beer tasting in the lobby of the new Performing Arts Center from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 17. Attendees will have an opportunity to taste selections from St. Lawrence Brewing Company, enjoy hors d'oeuvres served up by Potsdam Auxiliary and College Educational Services catering, and experience the new home of CPS and SUNY Potsdam's Department of Theatre and Dance. Tasting tickets are $10 per person, or $15 for a couple. Advance reservations for the tasting are requested.
Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased through the CPS Box Office, currently located in the lobby of SUNY Potsdam's new Performing Arts Center, or at Northern Music & Video in downtown Potsdam. Tickets can also be purchased by calling (315) 267-2277, or by visiting www.cpspotsdam.org.
