BATAVIA, NY (10/23/2018) In the wake of a nationwide concern and crisis over trillion dollar student loan debt, smart students and their families are discovering the college transfer process, and getting the most out of every tuition dollar. Long a community college benefit, transferability has progressed under the recent SUNY (State University of New York) Seamless Transfer program. In fact, in 2017 approximately 40% of Genesee Community College graduates transferred to a four-year degree program. To recognize this important facet of helping students achieve their career goals and not be saddled with unnecessary loans, college officials are taking some time on Wednesday, November 15, 2018 to celebrate the College Transfer process.
All currently enrolled GCC students who have even loose plans of transferring to a four-year institution after earning their GCC degree are all invited to the Student Success Center, room G200 on GCC's Batavia Campus at 12:30 p.m. for the Transfer Celebration Pizza and Pics Party. Students should bring or wear any hoodies, t-shirts, hats, etc. that promote the college or university they are considering transferring to. GCC's Transfer Services Center may even have a few college SWAG items students can borrow.
"With today's challenging economy and busy schedules, earning a two-year degree from GCC is an excellent propellant into the future," Kristen Hargrave, transfer coordinator at GCC said. "Seeing so many of our graduates go on to four-year institutions is a point of professional pride for me and a substantial goal for GCC. Their success is our success!"
The Transfer Center coordinates numerous information fairs and college visits throughout the year helping currently enrolled GCC students seek out and establish connections with four-year colleges and universities, both within the public SUNY system as well as private institutions. As an example, GCC's Transfer Fair in early October was one of the most well-attended fairs in recent history and more than 40 institutions present to meet face to face with transferring students.
Interestingly, articulation documents with SUNY Delhi were finalized this week with a new agreement into their Veterinary Technology BS program, as well as an updated agreement for nursing students to transfer into their Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Both agreements continue GCC's unending efforts to help students achieve their academic and career goals with maximum efficiency.
As college-bound students continue to seek out ways to avoid the huge burdens of student loan debt, community colleges have emerged as an affordable, quality solution. The trend inspired the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) to establish an annual National Transfer Student Week in mid-October. GCC hosted 'Advisor-in-Residence' events all week featuring Roberts Wesleyan's Adult and Graduate programs, The SUNY College at Brockport, Buffalo State College and the University at Buffalo
