SAN DIEGO, CA (06/19/2012)(readMedia)-- Celina Gonzalez of Mira Loma graduated summa cum laude from the University of San Diego on May 27.
Gonzalez earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with a Concentration in Mathematics.
At graduation, Gonzalez received the Alcala Award, given to one female and male graduate for excellence in scholastic achievement, leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, and service to the university community.
At USD she was an instructor, mentor, tutor and volunteer in local schools and organizations in the Linda Vista Community and went on service-learning immersion trips to New Orleans and East Los Angeles. She has been selected for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and will begin working at a family emergency shelter in Arizona in August. Gonzalez plans to become a teacher and an advocate for education in developing curriculum and outreach programs.
