BURLINGTON, VT (03/26/2014)(readMedia)-- To benefit the greater-Champlain community, Champlain College will host a Wellness Day on campus Sunday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public to galvanize mind, body and spirit.
The day's programming will include free group fitness classes every hour, a healthy lunch and juices catered by Eco Bean and Juice, nutritious snacks, personal training, nutrition seminars, chair massage, henna, and more.
"We are so excited to bring a day of health and wellness to Champlain College!" said Nakeeya Deas, Champlain College wellness coordinator. "We look forward to coming together with students, faculty, staff, and community members as we learn about and experience amazing fitness classes, good nutrition, and bit of pampering. I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday!"
The event will take place in the fitness center and Fireside Lounge in the IDX Student Life Center on South Willard St. Attendees can customize their day by selecting the fitness classes they wish to attend, what times they will be meeting with industry professionals to get tips on how to improve health, and when they choose to be pampered with a complimentary chair massage or mani/pedi.
The group fitness class schedule and class descriptions is as follows:
Throughout the day there will be small group and personal training with CrossFit-Level 1 trainer and Champlain alumni Christopher Pearson from CrossFit RVC in Lebanon, NH. He will also be helping people calculate their BMI and body fat percentage.
At noon., senior Ian Ebstien will conduct an hour-long Burpee-thon to contribute to Champlain's 1-million Burpees Challenge, which is taking place up until graduation on May 3. The challenge started on Feb. 27, and Ebstien has committed to 50,000 burpees in 60 days individually; that's 833+/- a day. "A burpee is an exercise that utilizes all your core muscles by dropping into a plank position, then jumping your legs into a squat and standing. We've committed to 1 million as a College because we want to show how we're dedicated to creating an active culture of fitness on campus," said Ebstein. "And we're all masochists. Ha ha."
Lunch will be served from 1 to 3 p.m., with a seminar at noon with dietitian Sumra Harper-Deas about making smart meal choices. Participants can bring home recipe cards and lots of valuable nutrition tips. Lunch will include high-protein recovery foods, as well as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diet options.
Sustain Champlain will provide stainless steel water bottles and talk about healthy sustainable ways to commute, support Fair Trade, and more. They will also be helping to sort trash and compost.
