LOCK HAVEN, PA (03/08/2011)(readMedia)-- Lock Haven University math major Christopher Dubbs presented a talk entitled "Alpha-Regular Unknots" at the 25th annual Student Mathematics Conference at Moravian College on February 26, 2011.
Dubbs is a senior at LHU and conducted his research for his optional honors capstone project under the direction of Dr. Angela Pile, assistant professor in the Mathematics Department.
In his presentation, Dubbs gave an overview of a procedure to find the minimum number of edges needed to construct an unknotted three-dimensional polygon with a fixed interior angle. Professor Pile explained that "Research in polygonal knot theory is relatively new in mathematics, and this new procedure provides a nice base for more research in the future."
A resident of Milesburg, Dubbs is the son of Holly and Harold Dubbs.
The Moravian College Student Mathematics Conference attracts students and faculty from public and private universities throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Each year LHU sends between 10 and 20 mathematics majors and faculty to the conference. Dr. James K. Strayer, professor of mathematics, has been directing the annual trip to the Moravian Math Conference since 1994.
