Citadel Cadet Nick Slater awarded winter fellowship in Saudi Arabia

CHARLESTON, SC (12/13/2011)(readMedia)-- Cadet Nick Slater is one of 10 American university students chosen to travel to the Middle East during winter break to participate in the 2011 Cultural and Education Exchange Experience for Model Arab League Alumni.

The Cultural and Education Exchange Experience for Model Arab League Alumni is sponsored by the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations. The program works to bring outstanding American college students to Saudi Arabia to educate them about both the country's distinct culture and global significance.

During the 12-day trip, Slater will gain direct personal experience in Saudi Arabian business affairs through meetings with government officials, policy makers and academics. He will also get a taste of the daily life by going to traditional markets and Saudi Arabian homes.

"We are proud that Cadet Slater is a student at The Citadel. He embodies all the fine qualities of principled leadership that we try to instill in all of our students," said Samuel M. Hines Jr., provost and dean of the college. "The Citadel's No. 1 strategic initiative No. 1 stresses educating principled leaders in a globalized environment. Cadet Slater's opportunity in Saudi Arabia will help him realize that goal."

Slater, a resident of Lawrenceville, Ga., is a junior political science major, a human affairs sergeant and a member of Palmetto Battery.

Slater said he owes the opportunity to travel to Saudia Arabia to Sarah Tenney, assistant professor of political science and criminal justice, who nominated him.
