NEW YORK, NY (03/29/2023) (readMedia)-- On Thursday, the New York City Arts in Education Roundtable, educators, students, Council Member Keith Powers and Seth Gilliam will call on the Mayor and the City Council to guarantee all schools have a certified arts teacher in order to address learning loss from COVID and mental wellness issues, and to equitably improve overall student performance.
The sophomore chorus will perform "Finale B" from Rent.
Before the pandemic, a majority of principals noted that funding for the arts was inadequate. And now, the pandemic has only exacerbated this problem, making the need for guaranteed arts education to help students equitably recover and thrive socially, emotionally, and academically even more critical. Research shows that arts education improves student performance, mental health and the overall chances of success later in life.
