Common Cause/NY Calls on Governor Cuomo to Consolidate Special Elections on November 7th

NEW YORK, NY (09/13/2017) (readMedia)-- Last night, three current state lawmakers won NYC Council seats, creating vacancies that require special elections. Senator Daniel Squadron's resignation earlier this summer brings the total number to four.

In response, Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause/NY issued the following statement:

"Governor Cuomo should save voters the cost and confusion of a separate special election, and consolidate them into the General on November 7th. The electorate is clearly disenchanted with our antiquated system of elections administration, with only 11% of eligible voters turning out to vote in New York City. We need to remove barriers to voting with early voting, instant runoff voting, and automatic voter registration--an advance the Governor could accomplish administratively without legislative action."
