Cuomo Ad Violates Election Law

Ads Created by AI or Computer Generated Must Carry Manipulation Disclosure

NEW YORK, NY (10/23/2025) (readMedia)-- In response to the release of a political ad by the Andrew Cuomo campaign purportedly featuring "criminals for Zohran Mamdani" and depicting Mamdani unlocking a jail cell to release the criminals, Common Cause NY Executive Director released the following statement:

"In addition to being offensive and a shocking attempt at fear-mongering that doesn't even pretend to engage in any political discourse, the ad released by the Andrew Cuomo campaign last night is clearly in violation of NY Election Law 14-106(5). That law requires materially deceptive political communications created with artificial intelligence or computer generated images to disclose that they are not real but rather manipulated. The Cuomo ad did not carry any such disclosure. The ad should be enjoined under the provisions of NY Election Law 14-106(5)(b)(iv) which allows candidates falsely depicted to obtain injunctive relief and attorneys' fees."
