NEW YORK, NY (10/28/2013)(readMedia)-- New York State suffers from weak disclosure laws and voters don't have the information they need to make informed decisions. Case in point: the pro-casino mailers sent by NY Jobs Now which fail to identify the financial backers of the PAC. NY Jobs Now identifies itself on its website as "a coalition of business leaders, labor unions, economic development professionals, educators and citizens", but its prime source of funding is the gambling industry. As they consider the issue of Las Vegas style casino gambling, voters might very well be interested to know whose interests are at stake. Common Cause/NY advocates for a package of stringent disclosure requirements for independent expenditures, including the requirement that any mailer or advertisement include disclosure of the top five financial backers of the ad.

Common Cause/NY has taken the opportunity to imagine a world in which PACs would be required to disclose their top five donors on all public materials (attached).

Such a bill will shortly be introduced before the New York City Council and should be included as part of comprehensive campaign finance reform in the state Legislature as well.
