Common Cause NY Statement on President-elect Trump Sentencing
U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow sentencing is further confirmation that states can hold Trump, other powerful individuals accountable for their illegal misconduct
NEW YORK, NY (01/10/2025) (readMedia)-- Today, Judge Juan Merchan sentenced President-elect Donald Trump after the former President was found guilty this summer on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. In response, Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause/NY issued the following statement:
"Today's sentencing formalizes the fact that the President-elect is a felon, and that nobody, regardless of how rich or powerful they are, is above the law. Throughout this process, Donald Trump's legal team sought to overturn or obstruct court proceedings, but at every step our state and federal courts upheld the common sense, evidence-based conclusion by 12 jurors that Mr. Trump broke the law. As powerful individuals seek to act without fear of consequences, states like New York will continue to respect the rule of law and hold them equally accountable for breaking our laws - regardless of their status."
