Community Leaders to Rally Thursday for Voting Reforms

NEW YORK, NY (06/12/2019) (readMedia)-- This year, the New York Legislature passed historic voting reforms – such as early voting and consolidated primaries – that help break down barriers to voting. But the legislative session ends next week, and, in a state with massive registration gaps and abysmal turnout rates, much more must be done to strengthen our democracy.

On Thursday, the New York Civic Engagement Table, Exodus Transitional Community, Let NY Vote, the New York Civil Liberties Union, RECAP, Dutchess County Progressive Action Alliance, Community Voices Heard, the Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Poughkeepsie, ENJAN Poughkeepsie, Nu-V.OT.E.R.S. Movement, Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey and Orange County Legislator Kevindaryan Lujan will join Hudson Valley activists calling for additional voting reforms to be passed before the session ends. Reforms include voting restoration for people on parole and automatic voter registration – which could register 1.1 million New Yorkers.
