SAN DIEGO, CA (05/15/2013)(readMedia)--  William Tressel of Concord will be the valedictorian for the University of San Diego's College of Arts and Sciences on May 26.

Tressel, who has a grade point average of 3.99, will receive his bachelor's degree in mathematics.

This fall, he will begin a PhD program in biostatistics at the University of Washington.

At USD, Tressel was the recipient of the Bishop Maher Catholic Leadership Scholarship. Earlier this month he received the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement in Mathematics Award from USD's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Tressel also earned departmental honors in mathematics and was honored for his service to the department. Tressel is a member of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

He participated in several regional and national undergraduate science conferences and was a member of an award-winning team in the Applied Mathematics section for poster presentations at the 2012 National Conference of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

At USD, Tressel was a tutor in the Mathematics Learning Center at USD. He participated in the Tijuana Spring Breakthrough, doing service projects over spring break. He was also a member of University Ministry, Students for Life and and Founders Club. 

Tressel graduated from Concord High School in 2009. His parents are Michael and Mary Tressel of Concord.
