AURORA, IL (05/07/2012)(readMedia)-- Aurora University presented an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to accomplished and recognized ophthalmologist Dr. David W. Parke during its May 6 undergraduate commencement ceremony. A resident of North Branford, Conn., Parke graduated from what was then known as Aurora College in 1948.

"His story embodies our historic commitment to character and scholarship," said President Rebecca L. Sherrick. "He's a true servant leader who finds meaning - even joy - as he continues to practice and teach the art and science of medicine."

Parke's resume includes distinguished service as a professor at the Yale School of Medicine, Chief of Ophthalmology at Meriden-Wallingford Hospital, president of the New Haven County Medical Society and a chairman for the Connecticut State Medical Society. The American Academy of Ophthalmology honored him in 2002 as "a tireless champion" of patients throughout the country. Today, he still volunteers at a low-vision clinic in Connecticut one day a week. Parke studied medicine at The Ohio State University and completed a residency at The Johns Hopkins University.
