ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (02/04/2014)(readMedia)-- Dr. Bridget Cooks will speak at Flagler College as part of the College's "Ideas and Images" program on Feb. 20.
Cooks, an associate professor of art history and African American studies at the University of California, Irvine, is the author of "Exhibiting Blackness: African Americans and the American Art Museum" (University of Massachusetts Press, 2011). H
Cooks' research focuses on African American art and culture, museum criticism, black visual culture, film, and feminist theory. She has worked in museum education at the National Gallery of Art, among other institutions, and has curated several exhibitions of African American art. Cooks has received a number of awards, grants, and fellowships for her work including the prestigious Henry Luce Dissertation Fellowship in American Art in 2000.
Cooks' lecture, "Portraiture, Politics, and the Documentary Impulse in the Photography of Chris McNair," will take place at 7 p.m. in the Flagler Room of Ponce de Leon Hall, 74 King St., St. Augustine.
"Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists Program" features an international composition of artists and authors, introducing a fresh and creative component to the greater St. Augustine community.
